the dramatic portrait: people & nudes in the badlands
south dakota 2008 | april 24th 2010
in may of 2009, sixteen artists - twelve photographers and four models - met near interior, south dakota for a five-day retreat/workshop in and around the badlands national park. this secluded, sacred territory with its sculpted soil, broad vistas and extraordinary light is an ideal dramatic background for figurative photography. the photographers and models worked together, incorporating the nude figure, the dramatic landscape, and the local culture to create evocative and often spectacular portraiture. this event was led by minnesota photographer douglas beasley as part of his vision quest photo workshops. this exhibit features the work of the students in the 2009 workshop.
