russell joslin: self portraits | april 5th 2008 | this minneapolis-based photographer's exhibition offers viewers firsthand insight into understanding the emotional dreamlike state revealed in his intimate black and white self-portraits. sometimes brutally dark and mysterious, the artist contorts his self-image into a disclosure of his own deeply personal feelings about himself, his surroundings, and his relationship between them. though often dressed in black, distorted or blurred in a way that almost suggests his presence more than it confirms it, joslin's frame is nonetheless carefully set in a place of honest vulnerability.
russell joslin has been working in photography for nearly 20 years, and has most recently concentrated on an ongoing series of self-portrait work. his black and white gelatin silver prints have been exhibited nationally and published internationally in a numerous galleries and publications. he is also the owner, editor and publisher of
SHOTS magazine, an independent, reader-supported, quarterly journal of fine art photography known for its democratic presentation of work by a variety of photographers from around the world.
SHOTS is now in its 22nd year of circulation and nearing the publication of its 100th issue.
